Altar Competition

The Alter Competition at Sri Sathya Sai Hostel for Senior Boys is a distinguished tradition that exemplifies the values of collaboration, creativity, and devotion inherent in the institution’s ethos. As students engage in this unique event, they embody the spirit of selflessness and community, echoing the sentiment often expressed within the hostel: “Each lives for the other, and all live for God.”

Each year, students from diverse academic years unite to design and construct an altar dedicated to Hridayayanivasi, or the "Dweller of the Heart." This collaborative endeavor provides a meaningful opportunity for students—many of whom may be strangers at the start—to come together with a shared goal. This experience fosters not only teamwork but also a profound sense of belonging, encapsulating the essence of the hostel community. As one participant noted, “Working together on the altar reminded me that our collective efforts can create something beautiful and divine.”

Preparation for the competition begins weeks in advance, with students eagerly discussing potential themes, designs, and materials. The Saturday before the event, necessary materials are distributed, allowing ample time for thoughtful planning and execution. This preparatory phase not only enhances creativity but also instills a sense of responsibility among students as they assign tasks based on individual strengths. A first-year student remarked, “It was inspiring to see how each person contributed their unique skills to our altar. It truly felt like a team effort.”

On the day of the competition, the atmosphere is charged with excitement and anticipation as students work diligently to complete their altars by the designated time of 3:30 PM. A panel of judges visit each room, assessing the altars and engaging with students to discuss the themes and learning outcomes. This interaction is invaluable, prompting participants to reflect deeply on their experiences and articulate the significance behind their creations. One judge reflected, “The students’ passion and dedication are palpable; it’s a privilege to witness their connection to the divine through their work.”

In the evening, results are announced, organized by student cohorts: First-Year Undergraduates, Second and Third-Year Undergraduates, and First and Second-Year Postgraduates. This classification not only promotes healthy competition but also nurtures camaraderie among students, reinforcing the bonds formed during preparation. A second-year participant expressed, “Winning was great, but the real reward was the friendships we built along the way.”

The event ends on a joyful note with a shared meal, where everyone comes together not just to celebrate the beautiful alters created, but also the bonds built along the way. As students sit side by side enjoying the food and laughter, the sense of togetherness is unmistakable. At the Sri Sathya Sai Hostel for Senior Boys, the Alter Competition is more than just a showcase of creativity, it’s a heartfelt celebration of unity, devotion, and the spirit of community that makes the hostel feel like home.

In the words of the founder, “Love is the source, love is the path, love is the goal.” Through this initiative, students honor their spiritual commitments and cultivate lasting relationships, reinforcing the profound sense of community that thrives within the walls of the hostel. As they reflect on their experiences, students emerge not only as individuals but as integral parts of a larger collective, united in purpose and spirit.
