Remeberence of Prof. Vishwanath Pandit

“Love in expression is service,” said our revered founder, Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba. This profound truth resonates deeply within the lives of those who have dedicated themselves to service, especially in Prasanthi Nilayam. One such remarkable individual, whose absence is keenly felt, is Sri Vishwanath Pandit, the esteemed former Vice-Chancellor of Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning (SSSIHL).

Hailing from the picturesque valley of Kashmir, Prof. Dr. V.N. Pandit was not only a distinguished economist but also a multifaceted personality known for his simplicity, honesty, and dedication to his students. He commanded immense respect and affection, serving as a role model for many. A pioneer in macroeconomic policy modeling in India, he earned his B.A. from Kashmir University and an M.A. in Economics from the Delhi School of Economics. His academic journey culminated in a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania, where he conducted research under Nobel Laureate Prof. Lawrence Klein.

Throughout his illustrious career, Prof. Pandit collaborated with some of India's most prominent economists, including former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and Nobel Laureate Prof. Amartya Sen. With over four decades at the Delhi School of Economics, he held various significant positions, including Head of the Department of Economics and Director of the Centre for Development Economics. His influence extended beyond India, serving as a visiting professor at prestigious institutions, including the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Manchester.

Prof. Pandit's contributions to the field of economics were extensive. He served as a consultant for the World Bank, the Planning Commission of India, and the government of Sri Lanka, among other esteemed roles. He was also the President of the Indian Econometric Society and received the Swami Pranavananda Saraswati Award from the UGC in recognition of his exemplary contributions.

In 1984, Prof. Pandit became associated with SSSIHL, where he played a pivotal role in establishing the Department of Economics and contributed significantly to academic programs. Appointed as the 8th Vice-Chancellor on August 5, 2008, he was affectionately known as the "Delhi Professor" by Bhagawan Baba. His tenure was marked by the introduction of the M.A. Economics program and the M.Phil. program across various subjects, solidifying SSSIHL’s reputation as a center of academic excellence.

Beyond his administrative achievements, Prof. Pandit was deeply involved in the Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organization, demonstrating unwavering devotion to Swami and a commitment to human values. His humility and straightforwardness earned him the love and respect of students and faculty alike. He embodied the spirit of service and compassion, helping all without distinction, and leaving an indelible mark wherever he went.

Pandit's passing on July 26, 2024, in Puttaparthi, has left a profound void in the Sri Sathya Sai community, the academic world, and the Kashmiri Pandit community to which he belonged. His legacy as a scholar, educator, and humanitarian will continue to inspire future generations.

In remembrance of the departed soul, a solemn and heartfelt programme was organised at the Sri Sathya Sai Hostel for Senior Boys by the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences in collaboration with the family of the deceased. The gathering served as a tribute to his life and legacy, with speakers recounting his remarkable contributions and noble qualities. The session concluded with collective prayers for his soul to merge at the divine lotus feet of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba. The occasion also served as a moment of reflection, inspiring all to embody his spirit of service, love, and humanity.
